Sea to Sky RCMP respond to two motorcycle accidents within an hour

Police responded to two motorcycle collisions yesterday, one being serious in nature that required a coordinated response and closure of Highway 99.

On May 2, 2023 at about 7:45 p.m., Sea to Sky RCMP Squamish responded to a single vehicle motorcycle collision just north of Lions Bay on Highway 99. The driver sustained upper body injuries and was being treated by BC Ambulance when officers were called away to a second motorcycle collision. The motorcycle required towing due to the extent of damage.

At about 8:25 p.m., Sea to Sky RCMP Squamish responded to the second collision, it happened in Britannia Beach on Highway 99 where the driver travelling southbound lost control of his bike. This driver’s injuries were critical in nature, he was taken by ambulance to a lower mainland hospital, and has since stabilized. The motorcycle was towed due to the extent of damage.

This collision required a multi-agency response, including the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS), BC Ambulance, Britannia Beach Fire Rescue, and Miller Capilano. Highway 99 was closed for about six and a half hours for the safety of the driver and responders as they processed the scene, including ICARS who conducted their investigation. Once the investigation is complete, police can assess what factors contributed to this incident.

May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. Sea to Sky RCMP Squamish have responded to three motorcycle accidents within four days along Highway 99. Despite these collisions, police and safety partners will continue their provincial campaign to promote road safety for everyone.

It’s hard for us to encourage car drivers to respect motorcyclists who don’t maintain control of their bikes and at times speeding laws.
