Trail and Greater District RCMP are happy to report there were no significant police incidents over the weekend at the Rossland Winter Carnival, in Rossland, BC.

Possible fraud in the Trail area

On Friday, January 27, 2023, a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer received a report of a possible fraud that occurred in the 3000 block of Lilac Crescent, in Trail, BC.

A 29-year-old Trail woman has posted an advertisement on a website that included her phone number. She received a message replying to her post from an unknown number stating that they had a parrot for her then electronically transferred her $200. The woman did not reply to the message. She reported the strange incident to the police out of concern that it may potentially be a fraud.

Normally getting pirated on the internet does involved getting a parrot and $200 in treasure. – Sgt. Wicentowich

Missing Nelson woman located by Trail RCMP

On Friday, January 27, 2023, at 10:49 a.m. a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer located Alissa Kuntzman, the 31-year-old Nelson woman reported missing out of Nelson, alive and well at a residence near Trail, BC.

Collision on highway between vehicle and electric bike
File # 2023-361

On Saturday, January 28, 2023, at 5:47 p.m. a frontline Trail and Greater RCMP was conducting a routine patrol in a marked vehicle when he located a collision that had just occurred between a bicyclist and vehicle in the 5800 block of Highway 3B, in Trail, BC.

The officer discovered that a 60-year-old Trail man was riding his electric bicycle eastbound on the shoulder of the highway when the passenger side mirror of a 2022 Ford Bronco allegedly struck him.

The 55-year-old Montrose woman driving the Bronco was travelling in the same direction as the man and his bicycle. The Bronco warning system reportedly notified thee woman about the impending collision just before contact was made. The 60-year-old Trail man was believed to have sustained a broken hip. He was transported by EHS to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital.

The investigation into the incident in ongoing.

Please make sure you are highly visible when you are riding your bicycle on our roadway. This bicycle was believed to have a working headlight and rear reflector; however, consider wearing highly reflective clothing to help stand out in the dark. Drivers, please be on the look out for bicycles on the shoulder of the road as the winter snow recedes. Give bicyclists ample room when you pass them to avoid any unfortunate incidents such as this one. - Sgt. Wicentowich

Intoxicated woman

On Friday, January 27, 2023, at 11:45 p.m. a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer received a visit from a 37-year-old Fruitvale woman and her 66-year-old mother at the Trail Detachment, in Trail, BC. The officer observed that the 37-year-old woman had been drinking alcohol and appeared under the influence.

The officer learnt that woman was being disruptive in the family home before attend the detachment with her mother. Her mother, and others in the family, did not want to manage her while she was under the influence of alcohol. The officer had a discussion with the pair and explained that he could not take the daughter into police custody, nor assist further in the matter.

I understand the urge for parents to drop badly behaved kids off at our detachment sometimes but we can’t take them due to the potentially astronomical daily demand for this desired service. – Sgt. Wicentowich

Impaired Driver

On Saturday, January 28, 2023, at 10:58 a.m. a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer was conducting a routine patrol in a marked vehicle when she observed a 27-year-old Trail woman driving her 1998 Jeep Cherokee leaving the parking lot of a liquor store, in Trail, BC.The woman was driving under the speed limit and turned her hazard lights on suddenly while driving on Schofield Highway from Trail toward Warfield. The officer detained the woman and her vehicle roadside.

During the roadside interaction, the officer made observations that lead her to believe that the woman’s ability to drive was impaired by alcohol and Marihuana. The officer entered into an impaired driving investigation. The officer determined that an alleged combination of alcohol and drugs affect the woman’s ability to operate her motor vehicle.

The 27-year-old Trail woman was issued a 24-hour Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) under section 215 of the BC Motor Vehicle Act.

Using both alcohol and drugs can have a compounding effect on your ability to operate a motor vehicle and make you a danger on the roadway. Please drink and use Marihuana responsibly as well as arrange for a sober ride ahead of time. – Sgt. Wicentowich

Theft of catalytic converters ongoing in Trail area

On Saturday, January 28, 2023, a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer received a report of a theft of a catalytic converter from 2013 Nissan Rogue parked near the intersection of Hanna Drive and Highway 22, in Rivervale, BC. The vehicle had been parked at the popular location as it was advertised for sale.\

Trail RCMP is recommending against leaving vehicles in this area as they are vulnerable to theft and damage.

Catalytic converters and items inside vehicles are currently the target of thieves operating in the area. Please take precautions to avoid becoming a victim - Sgt. Wicentowich

Excessive speed leads to fines and driving prohibition

On Saturday, January 28, 2023, at 8:05 p.m. a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer was conducting a routine patrol in a marked vehicle when he observed a grey 2012 Dodge Calibre travelling at a high rate of speed southbound on Highway 3B, in Trail, BC. The officer confirmed with his radar that the speed of the vehicle was 135km/h in the posted 90 km/h zone. The officer detained a 20-year-old Trail man and the vehicle for the roadside investigation.

The officer discovered that the man was a L class driver. The officer served the man a four month driving prohibition under Section 93(1)(a)(ii) of the BC Motor Vehicle Act which stemmed from a previous incident on the road. The officer issued the man a $196 fine for Speed Against Highway Sign contrary to Section 146(3) of the BC Motor Vehicle Act and a $138 fine for Driving Contrary to Restriction contrary to Section 25(15) of the BC Motor Vehicle Act.
