Explosive Disposal Unit attends for a ‘silly’ reason

2022-3522

On the heels of the military’s Explosive Ordinance Unit (EOD) having attended last week for a grenade being turned into the Detachment, the RCMP’s Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) attended on December 10, 2022 for a suspicious substance that resembled the highly explosive C4 plastic. Grand Forks police attended a residence on the 800 block of 72nd Ave for a report from the homeowner of the suspicious find. Officers attended and photographed the item and then consulted with EDU. EDU advised the item could possibly be C4 and sent their officers to investigate. In the end, the item appeared to be silly putty.

While a lot of time and resources were put into what turned out to be a household putty discovery, we will always treat suspicious packages seriously, said Detachment Commander Sergeant Darryl Peppler. And in the end, we will always be happy that the item was found not to be a threat or danger to the public, as opposed to having been genuine and a threat.

Another impaired driver removed from the road

2022-3530

On December 8, 2022 at 1050 PM, Grand Forks officers noted a vehicle driving erratically on 68th St and 1st Ave. The vehicle was stopped and officers spoke with the driver who displayed a few signs of impairment. The driver admitted to have been at a work party at a local drinking establishment. Two samples of their breath was collected roadside resulting in the driver failing the breath test. The driver, a 32-year-old man from Grand Forks was given a 90-day driving prohibition and had their vehicle impounded for 30 days.

The 90-day driving prohibition often turns into much longer for drivers as there are many steps in the process to get your driver’s license back, and in many cases, can take anywhere from 6 to 9 months to complete the process, said Sergeant Darryl Peppler. In addition, the costs add up as well with different fines, courses that need to be attended, and vehicle towing and impound fees, added Peppler. We are trying hard to relay to people that the risk they pose to the public getting behind the wheel impaired is high, but also the personal costs of losing one’s license and vehicle for an extended period of time and the effect that has on one’s livelihood and family is also extremely high.
