File # 22-9283

Over the Fall Fair weekend the Port Alberni RCMP responded to calls for service involving assaults at or near the fair grounds.

Approximately five percent of the calls during the Fair were related to attendees at the event. Front line officers responded assaults on the grounds including an incident Saturday night when multiple people were affected by bear spray.

Although the initial conflict appears to be targeted, several bystanders were heavily affected by the discharge of the bear spray in the area stated Constable Richard Johns, Paramedics with BC Ambulance Service assisted with treating those affected. Although not all intended victims have been located, several suspects are identified. Police are looking to speak with anyone with information, photos or video about this incident, they are requested to contact our office directly at 250-723-2424.

All though not all were directly related to the Fall Fair, over the same period, 19 people were held in custody over the weekend. Some were released without charge, for a later court date with conditions to keep the peace, or held for court.
