The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of a police involved shooting near Houston where one individual has been injured.

On Tuesday August 30, 2022, at approximately 3:40 a.m., members from the Houston RCMP responded to a report of a break, enter and theft of a boat in progress at a lodge in Topley Landing, BC. The location of the complaint was approximately 50 kilometres north of Highway 16 between Houston and Burns Lake.

The members staged near a bridge in the area anticipating anyone leaving the area would travel past their location. A vehicle approached and members noted it was towing a boat believed to be stolen from the lodge. Police say that the vehicle allegedly drove towards one of police officers who fired their service pistol. The driver of the vehicle received a non-life threatening injury. They were taken by EHS to an area hospital for medical assessment and cleared for police custody. No one else was injured.

Both the driver and a passenger from the vehicle were arrested in connection with the initial theft investigation, which is being lead by the Houston RCMP. The scene has been secured and is being processed.

The IIO BC has been notified and is investigating the actions of police. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.

Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation by the IIO BC. For more information about the IIO BC and media updates, you can visit its website at www.iiobc.ca .
