File # 22-296

Tumbler Ridge RCMP are warning local residents of ongoing online scams in which victims are asked to purchase gift cards, crypto currency, bitcoin, and other forms of electronic payment methods.

The scammers are offering, get rich quick schemes and guaranteeing the victims that they will receive money and or other forms of compensation for sending them the requested payments.

These scams are more sophisticated because the scammers are not only seeking financial gain but also seeking to acquire your personal information including social insurance number, drivers license number, personal photographs, home address and other documents that they'll later either sell that information or impersonate you.

Here are some tips on how to avoid being scammed online:

- If the person is asking you to purchase GIFT CARDS or BITCOIN, it's probably a scam!
- If the person sends you a cheque and asks you to deposit it right away then asks you to send them back any over-payment amount, it's probably a scam!
- If the person asks you for you to provide your Social Insurance Number online, it's probably a scam!

Remember this: If they ask you to purchase GIFT CARDS or BITCOIN for payments, it's probably a scam!

If you receive a phone call, text message, email or any other form of communication requesting payment or sensitive personal information, do not provide it and simply hang up or don't reply.

You can block the number to prevent the scammers calling from back, and if in doubt contact your local RCMP detachment.
