Local man follows trail of evidence to solve crime

Trail and Greater District RCMP File # 2022-2853/2838

On July 5, 2022, 7:37 a.m. Trail and Greater District RCMP received a report from a 57-year-old Trail man who literally followed a trail of evidence to solve the theft of 10 flower pots from his residence, in Trail, BC. The man discovered that an unknown suspect had taken the flowers pots from his property sometime overnight. The man launched into detective mode and followed a trail of flower petals from his residence to a residence in the 1900 block of Oak Street. He located and recovered his flower pots from the residence. The man contacted the Trail Detachment to report the incident.

A frontline RCMP officer attended the residence in question and spoke to an occupant. While speaking to the occupant, an officer recognized and recovered two additional hanging flower baskets that had be stolen from a different residence on the previous day. The officer returned the baskets to the rightful owner.

Trail RCMP will continue to monitor the residence in the 1900 block of Oak Street, in Trail, BC.

Trail RCMP would like to thank the 57-year-old Trail man for his following his instincts in this matter, and for reporting it to the RCMP. The owner of the hanging baskets was extremely grateful to have her baskets back. Trail RCMP would also like to recognize Constable Kevin Johnson for keeping a sharp eye out for this stolen baskets while conducting his investigation. - Sgt. Wicentowich

Telephone Fraud Scam Warning

File # 2022-2912

On July 8, 2022, at 3:09 p.m. Trail and Greater District RCMP received a report about a recent telephone fraud ongoing in the Trail and Greater District area. A Beaver Valley resident stated she received a call from an unknown suspect claiming to represent a well-known cell phone provider company. The resident provided some information to the person but later realized later that the person did not work for the company. The resident took immediate action to protect herself from further victimization by alerting her bank and other agencies to the potential fraud.

The recent nationwide cell phone outage has caused a spike in the number of cell phone scams. Please do not provide any information over the phone to potential scammers. - Sgt. Wicentowich

Wandering young bear

File # 2022-2913

On July 8, 2022, at 3:32 p.m. Trail and Greater District RCMP received a report that a young bear was wandering around a residential property in the 1400 block of Lookout Street, in Trail, BC. The bear damaged one of the windows at the residence. RCMP notified the BC Conservation Officer who was already working in the area and would conduct follow up with the complainant.

Wildlife is a part of our daily lives in the Kootenays. Please check your property for potential food sources and attractants to prevent conflict with wildlife. – Sgt. Wicentowich

Theft of Chainsaws

On July 8, 2022, at 7:50 p.m. Trail and Greater District RCMP received a report that an unknown suspect had broken into a shed on a property in the 700 block of Warren Lane, in Trail, BC. Three chainsaws were stolen from the shed and match the following descriptions:
