Domestic Violence Leads to Arrest of Male – Sparwood, B.C.

On March 19, 2022 shortly after 3:30 a.m., an anxious female called police at a local hotel as she had been assaulted and choked by her boyfriend. A responding officer located the male in front of the hotel but the male ignored commands and became argumentative. When the male attempted to return to the victim in the lobby, it caused the police to be concerned for her well being, the police deployed a conducted energy weapon and was able to safely arrest the male. The female was later treated in hospital and relased. Under direction from the Criminal Code, the male was released from police custody on strict conditions including no contact with the female.
On April 17, 2022, the female called a family member who in turn called police due to another similar incident of assault and choking. The male was arrested again, taken before a Judge and remains in custody to be dealt with by the courts. The female sustained more serious injuries in the second assault and has received further medical care.
Cst. Debra Katerenchuk said, this case highlights the challenging and conflicting emotions and dangers faced by victims of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) every day in Canada.
The Elk Valley RCMP take IPV seriously and work with community partners like the Fernie Women’s Resource Centre and Elk Valley Safe Homes to support victims. Changes to the Criminal Code in recent years have given the police and the courts more options to protect victims and also make it harder for repeat offenders to get bail in order to get out of jail.
If you know someone affected by IPV, there are resources available to reduce the challenges of leaving a violent relationship.
Theft from Park Place Lodge-Fernie, B.C.

On April 21, 2022, around 1:30 p.m., an employee from the Park Place Lodge contacted the police to report that a disguised male had stolen from the money drawer/safe. The unknown male had approached the front desk and requested that his room be checked for a strange smell. When the employee returned from checking the room, the male had departed with a large sum of money.
The Caucasian male had been described as approximately 5’7, medium built, black buff covering his face, two hoods up, black ski coat, black bulky gloves, black boots, and a prominent nose bridge.
Elk Valley RCMPolice is appealing to the public for any witnesses who they believe may have been in the area either walking by or driving by.

Sweepstakes Scams, Elk Valley

On April 22, 2022, a member from the public contacted the police to report a fraudulent call he had received from a private number. The male caller said he had just won 1.5 million dollars though a sweepstakes but needed to provide a credit card number or bank draft in the amount of $2,500.00 to pay for fees associated for the price. He was then instructed to make the bank draft to an address in Saskatchewan. The highly alert member from the public quickly recognized this as a scam and hung up the phone.
RCMPolice would like to recommend to not assume the telephone number contacting you is legitimate as computer software can replicate any phone number. Do not send money electronically or make payments to anyone over the phone without taking the proper steps. It is very important to know that once money is sent electronically it likely cannot be recovered.

Single Commercial Vehicle MVI-Sparwood, B.C.

On April 26, 2022, just before 10:30 p.m., police responded to a semi trailer that had flipped with its load of salt, into the ditch on its side on Highway 3 just south of Sparwood, B.C. Sparwood Fire Department and BC Emergency also responded to the call. The driver, who did not sustain any serious injury, was extracted from the vehicle and transported to the Fernie Hospital for medical assessment.
There were no other vehicles or persons involved in this motor vehicle incident.
The load of salt remained intact.
