File # 2022-934

On Thursday, April 16, 2022 at 12:38 pm, New Hazelton RCMP were called to an area along Highway 37 and Kitwanga North Road in Gitwangak for a report of a brush fire.

On arrival police noted that the north side of the hill next to the highway was burning, approximately 500 meters wide from the base and moving up to the top of the hill. Kitwanga, Gitanyow, and BC Wild Fire were called to the scene.

While on scene, police received information that a person was seen in the area shortly before the fire started and appeared to be setting off fireworks. This same person was also seen walking along Highway 37 right before the fire started.

Through investigation and key details provided by witnesses in the community, police arrested one adult man who was brought before the court. Later he was released on conditions, pending a future court date.

While the cost incurred with this arson is extensive, we are thankful that no one was injured, said S/Sgt Darren Durnin, NCO i/c New Hazelton RCMP. The investigation remains ongoing.
