Speed Watch back on the Streets

Terrace

2022-04-07 11:30 PDT

The City of Terrace RCMP Volunteers are back at it, trying to slow down traffic and make the roads safer for our community.

Speed Watch is an educational program aimed at reducing incidents of speeding. It is designed to raise public awareness of the actual speeds that drivers are travelling and is conducted in partnership with the Terrace RCMP, citizen volunteers, and ICBC.

Speed Watch checks are conducted by trained volunteers or RCMP using portable radar equipment and a digital radar board to monitor speeds in neighbourhoods, schools and playground zones, or other high risk areas. Its main purpose is to help address traffic and speeding problems through awareness.

The program is back out in full swing in Terrace and you may have already noticed volunteers conducting the program. Some registered owners of vehicles may have already received warning letters in the mail asking them to reflect on what they can do to help in the goal of spreading awareness and affecting change.

These volunteers make an amazing contribution to road safety in our community and we appreciate their efforts, says Cst Kelly Cates. It’s a great program to spread awareness, and we are always looking for volunteers to join the team.

With winter behind us, Speed Watch volunteers will focus their efforts on school zones and other high risk areas that have been identified.

Anyone interested in being part of the program can contact Cst Cates for an application at 250-638-7400 or at the email below.
