File # 2021-4771

The Terrace RCMP and BC Coroners Service are investigating a fatal train incident that claimed a Terrace woman’s life last week.

Just after 7:00 p.m. on Saturday May 29, 2021 Terrace RCMP received several emergency calls reporting that a woman had been struck on the train tracks in the 3100-block of School Street, Terrace.

When frontline officers arrived they found an unresponsive 21-year-old woman laying beside the tracks. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene by BC Emergency Health Services.

Witnesses reported the woman was on the tracks and despite repeated train whistle sounds to alert the woman to the on-coming train, she did not move. The train was unable to stop prior to the woman being struck.

While we are continuing to investigate, it does not appear the woman’s death was a result of any criminality but rather a tragic accident, states S/Sgt. Janelle Shoihet of the BC RCMP.

The BC Coroners Service is also conducting its own fact finding investigation around the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.

The woman will not be identified and no further information is available.

Anyone who may have been a witness or may have dash cam or other video of this incident, and has not already spoken with police is asked to contact the Terrace RCMP.
