File # 2022-3383

On the afternoon of July 15, 2022 officers at the Sidney North Saanich RCMP responded to a report of a man who was located in the waters offshore near Tsehum Harbour. A local couple were Kayaking when they saw a Zodiac vessel circling without an operator. The couple quickly located a man who had fallen off the Zodiac vessel. The man was located face down in the water and was unresponsive.

Acting quickly, the couple rescued the man from the water and had a nearby sailboat radio for further assistance. The man was taken ashore where RCMP officers and a United States Coast Guard member working on a jointly crewed ShipRider patrol, performed CPR along with assistance from Parks Canada, Fire Rescue and Ambulance. Thanks to the efforts of all involved the man was resuscitated and is currently in hospital receiving treatment.

The Sidney North Saanich RCMP is grateful to all of those who assisted in rescuing this man. Had it not been for the quick actions of all involved this man likely would not have survived. This is an example for the public on the importance of wearing and having access to personal flotation devices while operating watercraft, said Corporal Andres Sanchez, Media Liaison with the Sidney North Saanich RCMP.
