Theft alert: six reports of stolen catalytic converters in four days

A recent rash of catalytic converter thefts has the Kamloops RCMP Detachment warning the public to be on the lookout for suspicious activity.

Between Friday Sept. 16 and Monday Sept. 19, 2022, police received at least six reports of catalytic converters stolen in the south part of the city, namely Versatile Drive, Hugh Allan Drive, and Pineview-Dufferin areas. Catalytic converters are part of a vehicle’s exhaust system, targeted for their precious metals and black market value.

To access this part, thieves have to go underneath the vehicle and physically cut the convertor off, making vehicles that sit higher off the ground more attractive for this kind of theft, said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson. We understand that these thefts can be hard to stop with crime prevention measures alone. We’re asking the public to be extra sensitive to suspicious sounds or activities that occur near parked vehicles and to contact us right away with information that could help lead police to a suspect.

Below are some tips to help catch thieves and avoid being a victim:

• Install good lighting and functional security cameras that you know how to use,
• Park your vehicles in well-lit areas in view of security cameras,
• If possible, use a locked garage or compound to park your vehicles overnight,
• Watch for suspicious electrical tool noises and people under cars- especially late at night or in isolated parking lots,
• Call 911 if you think you see a crime in progress,
• Report all catalytic converter theft (or attempted theft) to the police as soon as possible.
