BC RCMP notifies IIO BC of incident in Burnaby

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Burnaby where one woman has died.

On March 6, 2024, at 7:50 p.m., the Burnaby RCMP attended a report of a disturbance at a location on Skyline Drive where they arrested and subsequently lodged a woman in cells without incident. The woman was released from custody the following morning but was arrested again less than an hour later for causing a disturbance and assault at a location on Moscrop Street. The woman was lodged in cells where during a regular cell check, she was discovered to not be breathing.

The woman received immediate medical attention but was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The IIO BC is investigating police actions in the incident. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
