The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident near Spuzzum where one man has died.

Just after 9 a.m. this morning, July 14, frontline officers from the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment were called to a report of a man in crisis. The man had allegedly told a loved one that he intended to harm himself by driving off a bridge.

An officer located the man driving his vehicle on Highway 1 near Hells Gate, BC. The man failed to stop and drove over an embankment with a significant drop. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Lower Mainland RCMP Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstructionist Service (ICARS) has been called to assist in the investigation, and IIOBC has been notified and is also attending.

Highway 1 is currently closed in both directions near Hells Gate as the investigation is undertaken. Motorists are asked to avoid the area and consult drivebc.ca for the most up to date road closure information.

The IIO BC is now investigating the incident in an effort to determine whether police actions contributed to the man’s death. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.

Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation by the IIO BC. For more information about the IIO BC and media updates, you can visit its website at www.iiobc.ca .
