During the Month of May, Burnaby RCMP partnered with ICBC and RoadSafetyBC, in an effort to address high risk driving.

Starting May 1, Burnaby Traffic Services focused on high-risk driving activities, specifically excessive speeding.

Enforcement activities were conducted throughout the City of Burnaby, including school zones and playground areas, yielding staggering results.

When a driver gets behind the wheel of a vehicle, it is their responsibility to know the speed limit in the area they are travelling, says Sergeant Gary Johal, with Burnaby RCMP’s Traffic Services. The number of drivers our officers stopped this past month, who chose to speed well over the limit, is confounding.

Some of the speeding drivers observed this past month were driving to work, or driving is their profession. An example of this occurred on May 17 when one of our officers stopped a ride share vehicle with a passenger in the back seat. The driver was travelling 110 km/hr in a 50 km/hr zone. The driver was issued a violation ticket for excessive speeding and the vehicle was impounded for 7 days.

Other drivers that were stopped for excessive speeding included the following:

These are just a sample of the driving behaviours observed by our officers during this past month. A total of 137 drivers were not only ticketed, but their vehicles were impounded for a minimum of 7 days. This is a significant increase, considering the yearly average is typically 100.

The hope is that this serves as a reminder that speeding not only comes with a financial impact, but real-life ramification, said Sergeant Gary Johal.

An 18-year-old driver was stopped by a Burnaby RCMP officer on May 21. The officer recognized the driver, because this same officer had stopped the young man for speeding on April 7. In April, the officer issued a ticket for speeding and other violation tickets. On May 21, the 18-year-old driver was travelling 96km/h in a 50km/h posted speed zone, in a vehicle registered to his father. The young man was ticketed for excessive speeding and given an automatic vehicle impoundment. Both times the young man had a high-school aged passenger in the vehicle with him.

The hope is that campaigns such as this provide education and awareness to the public of the inherent dangers of speeding, in particular, excessive speeding, said Corporal Laura Hirst, Media Relations Officer. According to RoadSafetyBC, speed is a leading cause of death on B.C roads
